A while ago I posted my favourite films of 2012 so far, and now I would like to share my final top five films of 2012. The list is far from definitive as there are still films I would like to see like Argo, The Hobbit, Seven Psychopaths, Killing Them Softly and Silver Linings Playbook to name a few.
Now I do realize this post is late in coming but better late than never right?
Skyfall, Sam Mendes
Quite possibly the best Bond film ever and definitely my favourite. Thrilling from beginning to end, with some marvelous set pieces, an engaging plot, nice character moments and some fancy nods to the older films in the series, this was Bond at his spectacular best.
21 Jump Street, Phil Lord & Chris Miller
I was genuinely surprised by this film, I didn’t catch it at the cinema and only saw it recently on blu ray, and with it being another comedy remake of an old television show I didn’t have much hope for it at all. However, it is honestly one of the funniest films I have seen in a good while, and better than the mildly over hyped Ted. A true gem, see it if you get the opportunity.
Looper, Rian Johnson
Simply an amazing film, working on so many levels and pulling in excellent performances from everyone involved. A must see, if you haven’t already that is.
Avengers Assemble, Joss Whedon
The best superhero film ever, fact! After years of build up with each hero getting their own individual outing, it still wasn’t ever going to be easy making them all gel in one film, but Marvel had an ace up their sleeve in Joss Whedon. Already a God among geeks and being huge geek himself he did an incredible job with this film. There is a DC executive somewhere kicking himself for not letting Joss Whedon carry out his idea for a Wonder Woman film.
The Cabin In The Woods, Drew Goddard
The smartest & funniest horror film in years, The Cabin In The Woods is a genre bending classic that simply has to be seen. It contains so many twists and turns along the way, that to tell anyone of them would be to spoil the film completely. Just go and see it, go on, now, you won’t be disappointed.
Honorable mentions: Dredd, The Dark Knight Rises, Chronicle.
