The Monday roundup is your handy little guide to everything movie related. Including the best of the weekends news, what’s new on DVD & Blu-Ray & what you can look forward to at the cinema this week.

News bites

  • Mel Gibson has joined the cast of The Expendables 3 and is set to play the big bad in the movie. Antonio Banderas has also joined the cast, but his role is still unconfirmed. They both join Harrison Ford, who has replaced Bruce Willis, and the likes of Wesley Snipes, Nicolas Cage & Milla Jovovich as the new members of the team.
  • Magic themed bank heists are something of a rarity, so it’s little surprise that this summers Now You See Me was quite a hit at the box office and is already being prepped for the sequel treatment. Having cost roughly $75 million to make, and having grossed around $275 million worldwide, this was a no brainer really, whether it lends itself to a sequel remains to be seen but we will all find out in the summer of 2015.
  • It pains me to report on gossip but it’s a fairly slow news day today, so gossip is what you’re getting. The latest Batman casting rumours for the upcoming Superman vs Batman movie point towards either Christian Bale or Orlando Bloom (I said it was a slow day) donning the cape. Bale has, apparently, been offered a $50 million payout for the part, while Bloom would be perfect to play off Henry Cavill. My thoughts on this are that we all know Bale won’t be back as Batman, and Bloom wouldn’t convince in a bar fight in his local let alone go toe to toe with Cavill’s Superman.
  • This weekend’s battle for box office supremacy was won by Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, which took $30 million over the weekend. We’re The Millers took second with $26.5 million. Disney’s spin-off to Cars, Planes took a poor looking $22 million, while Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters was the dud of the weekend taking only $14.6 million. 2 Guns filled out the top five by taking $11 million in its second week of release.

DVD/Blu-ray pick of the week

evil-dead-remake

There are a few good releases this week, my other choice would be The Place Beyond The Pines, but my pick of the week is the remake of the Evil Dead. An utter bloodbath of a film, you need a strong stomach and maybe some spare underwear when watching this film. My original review of Evil Dead can be found here.

Cinema pick of the week

Kick-Ass-2-Poster

Kick-Ass 2 is released on Wednesday August 14th and will hopefully be just as good as the first movie. The plot synopsis is as follows: “The costumed high-school hero Kick-Ass joins with a group of normal citizens who have been inspired to fight crime in costume. Meanwhile, the Red Mist plots an act of revenge that will affect everyone Kick-Ass knows.”
