The Monday Roundup

The Monday roundup is your handy little guide to everything movie related. Including the best of the weekend’s news, what’s new on DVD & Blu-Ray & what you can look forward to at the cinema this week.

News bites

  • News that is sure to satiate fans of the original Carrie comes in the form of the MPAA announcing that the remake will receive an R rating, which should translate to a 15 certificate here in the UK. The R rating has apparently been defined as the film contains “bloody violence, disturbing images, language and some sexual content.” Fantastic.
  • Even though there is already many critics of the film, Jeff Bridges has added his name to the list of people who were underwhelmed by recent sci-fi comedy R.I.P.D. Considered one of the biggest flops of the year, alongside The Lone Ranger, Bridges recently spoke to GQ and gave the following quote: “I had such a great time working on that movie. I remember what we were doing. I thought ‘this could be fun to see.’” He continued, admitting “when I saw it, I was a little underwhelmed. For my mind, the studio made some choices that I wouldn’t have made“.
  • Whilst doing the rounds for his new film, Rush, Chris Hemsworth was asked to comment on the rivalry between Marvel & DC and their cinematic universes. Hemsworth summed it up nicely by exclaiming “We’re just winning aren’t we? That’s not really a rivalry.”
  • Finally, the US box office has a new number one in the form of Hugh Jackman starring kidnap thriller Prisoners, which took a pretty decent $21 million. Insidious: Chapter 2 fell to second place taking $14.5 million. The Family came in third with another $7 million. Whilst Instructions Not Included took just over $5 million, and Battle Of The Year completed the top 5 with $5 million strangely enough.

Cinema pick of the week

Prisoners is currently sitting atop of the US box office and is likely to do the same in the UK this week. Prisoners stars Hugh Jackman & Jake Gyllenhaal, the IMDb has this synopsis for us: “When Keller Dover’s daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family?”
