Making the announcement late last night, or early this morning depending on your time zone, DC and Warner Bros. finally announced the lineup for the David Ayer directed Suicide Squad film. The lineup seems to consist largely of that which had been reported over the past few weeks, and does indeed confirm that Jared Leto will play the Joker.
After weeks of online rumours and speculation, DC and Warner Bros. have announced the following cast for the follow-up to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Tom Hardy will play Rick Flag
Will Smith will play Deadshot
Jai Courtney will play Captain Boomerang
Cara Delevingne will play Enchantress
Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn
And Jared Leto will play the Joker
Most, if not all, of these names will come as little surprise to anyone who pays attention to film news on a daily basis, but they are interesting choices nonetheless. It will be fun to see Will Smith play a villain for once, and despite Tom Hardy being familiar as Batman villain, Bane, he is such a good actor that this is unlikely to hinder his performance or the audience’s enjoyment.
Jai Courtney’s Boomerang (careful girls) will hopefully have a rivalry with Deadshot over who has the better aim, while Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress will bring a magical edge to the film. Margot Robbie was all but confirmed as Harley Quinn weeks ago, and Jared Leto perhaps has the biggest shoes to fill as he steps into the role of the Joker.
It is likely that Deadshot, Boomerang, Flag and Enchantress will form the core of the team, while THR makes the assumption that in order for the audience to root for this team of B-list villains, they will need someone a lot more sinister to play the big bad, and that the main villain will indeed be the Joker.
Suicide Squad will be released in 2016.
